As January comes around, there will be lots of new faces in gyms and exercise classes. This is the time of year when many people’s new years resolution is to improve their health and lifestyle. Starting can seem like an impossible task, so remember these 3 points to help you along the way......
1. Results don’t come overnight
As much as I wish this wasn’t true results don’t come easy. Unfortunately, you cannot undo damage or reach your goals in one week. Results will take time and it is important to remember this in order to stay motivated. There are ups and downs for everyone along the way and we all fall ‘off the wagon’ now and again. Taking progress photos and keeping a log of your big lifts (squats,deadlifts) is by far the best way to assess changes and will give you the most accurate representation of how you are getting on. Keep pushing and remember every little progression counts towards those long-term goals.
2. Consistency is key
As I mentioned above, results won’t happen overnight, but they will come a lot faster with consistency. You don’t need absolute restriction and perfection when it comes to your diet and training, however adhering to some sort plan is key. If this plan requires training 3x per week and sticking to X calories, try to do this as much as possible. Staying on track at the weekends is so important and will speed up your results too! Friday, Saturday and Sunday are 40% of the week after all.
3. Everyone was a beginner at some stage
The third and probably most important point is to remember that everyone started somewhere. Going into the gym for the first time can be intimidating and I have had countless clients tell me that they feel uncomfortable working out by themselves but are embarrassed to ask for help. In any gym the trainers and staff are there to help you so don’t be afraid to ask! Social media platforms are also full of trainers and professionals looking to help people so if you are unsure about something there will be hundreds of people willing to give you some advice.
Take everything one day at a time and set yourself short, medium and long-term goals. Most importantly, enjoy the process! 😊
